Fairfield firefighters responds to structure fire on Post Road

Fairfield firefighters put out a fire at 1580 Post Road on Monday afternoon.

The Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call from the occupants of 1580 Post Road, D’Valda & Sirico’s Dance and Music Center, reporting smoke in the building on Nov. 25, at 12:40 p.m. The Fairfield Fire Department was immediately dispatched with four engines and two ladders, along with the shift commander.

The first fire unit to arrive on scene was Car 3 with Assistant Chief Schuyler Sherwood, who assumed command. It was determined that there was smoke showing from the roof of the building and smoke in the structure and the adjoining occupancies. All additional available Fairfield resources were requested to the scene.

Mutual aid from adjoining towns, including Westport, Bridgeport and Norwalk, were also requested to assist either at the scene or at other emergencies in the town of Fairfield. Two additional Fairfield assistant chiefs were requested to report to duty.

Due to the restricted access around the building, it was very difficult to determine the actual location of the fire. The fire was located on the outside of D’Valda & Sirico’s and had spread to the interior walls. The fire department initiated an aggressive attack with charged hose lines. The building and adjacent stores were evacuated.

American Medical Response and additional fire units were requested to the scene. All on duty Fairfield Fire Department resources were required to control the fire. Chief Richard Felner was on scene and supporting the command operation.

Adjoining occupancies were found to have a smoke condition that was ventilated by the fire department utilizing positive pressure ventilation. The fire was placed under control at approximately 1:30 p.m.

One fire fighter was injured while operating at the scene and was taken by ambulance to the hospital. The firefighter was treated and has been released.

The business suffered extensive fire damage to the exterior of the building and water and smoke damage throughout the occupancy. The fire marshal’s office is conducting an investigation.

While fire units were operating at this building fire, a motor vehicle struck a commercial building at 1619 Post Road, Rite Aid, which is located almost across the street from the fire. Westport fire units responded removed the driver. This was the third large incident on the Post Road in Fairfield on Monday.
