UIL employee Doretta Sackville presents the company’s employee raffle fund-raiser check to Ronald W. Vedrani, commander of Connecticut’s the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

In observance of Veterans Day, employees at UIL Holdings Corp. and its operating companies, United Illuminating Co., Southern Connecticut Gas Co., Connecticut Natural Gas Corp. and Berkshire Gas, wanted to show their support for veterans with more than a remembrance and a thank you. They wanted to give something back.

UIL’s Employee Volunteer Council sponsored a basket raffle fund-raiser where council members donated items and created baskets that were raffled at each operating company. The employee-driven fund-raiser raised $2,795.

Employees from UIL recently presented the Connecticut chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart with a check at its Derby office, the first chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart to be established in Connecticut.

“This year we wanted to show our thanks to veterans for their service by doing something new,” said Shelly Saczynski, director of community & economic development. “I’m very pleased with the results of our employee’s efforts for this fundraiser.”

All money raised will benefit the Military Order of the Purple Heart in Connecticut and Soldier On in Massachusetts.

The organizations will purchase gift cards to Stop & Shop and other retail stores, as well as buy and distribute supplies to veterans and their families in need.
