RTM Republicans elect leadership

Following the 2013 Inauguration Ceremony for Fairfield on Nov. 18, Edward J. Bateson III was elected majority leader of the Representative Town Meeting (RTM) by the Republican caucus, and Michael D. Herley was elected deputy majority leader. Bateson is currently serving his fourth term on the RTM and Herley is in his third term.

This past Election Day, Fairfield Republicans won the majority on the RTM and now hold 34 seats on the 50-member body.

“Ed Bateson is a well-respected and steadfast leader who has shown time and time again his commitment to the people of Fairfield and for keeping our Town affordable,” said James Millington, chairman of the Fairfield Republican Town Committee. “I am pleased to see the Republican RTM caucus elect him as its majority leader. Ed has the wisdom, the knowledge and the diplomacy skills to be a fair and thoughtful leader, and his election as majority leader only underscores these fine characteristics.”

Bateson, a life-long Fairfield resident, has served on the RTM since 2007. He has served in variety of leadership positions, including chairman of the Legislation and Administration Committee and deputy majority leader.

A graduate of Fairfield University, Bateson is a small business owner. He and his wife are the parents of a daughter.

Herley has served on the RTM since 2010, and most recently served as chairman of the Public Health and Safety Committee.

Herley holds a graduate degree in mathematics from Fairfield University and an MBA from St. John’s University. He is employed at a communications firm in New York City and lives in Southport with his wife and three children.

“Michael’s energy and enthusiasm to give back to his community is contagious,” Millington said. “He is a skilled communicator and a master facilitator. Michael is well versed on the issues and has his finger on the pulse of the community.

“Ed and Michael are the perfect team to guide the Republican RTM caucus over the next two years. I wish them both the best of luck in their new leadership roles,” he said.
