Ludlowe discovers what other teams already knew

The No. 5 Fairfield Ludlowe girls volleyball team found out why Cheshire High was seeded No. 1 in the Class LL state semifinals at Trumbull High on Thursday night.
Cheshire used a consistent performance in all areas to win a 3-0 (25,11, 25-20, 25-13) decision,  and the SCC champion Rams will take an overall 25-0 record into their title match with No. 2 Staples of Westport, which defeated No. 3 Greenwich High, 3-1, in the other semi.
“I’m so proud of this team,” Ludlowe coach Meghan Skelton said after her team completed an outstanding 20-3 season. “We graduated all our starters from a year ago, but I never thought of this as a rebuilding year.”
The second set showed off the best both squads had to offer.
Andrea Alvarez and Pauline Blatt took turns setting up Casey Boatwright and April Cooke in the middle for stinging kills.
Boatwright had a three-point run in give Ludlowe its first lead at 7-6 when Lauren Schreiber stuffed home a short return at the net.
The second game was tied four times — the last at 11 — with Olivia Auray, Olivia McLaughlin and Keki Cardenas chipping in on the front row.
Auray’s bump to an open spot earned a side out, an Schreiber’s ace saw the Falcons close within 18-17.
Cheshire’s Eva Whalen took back serve with a cross-court kill, and then the senior stepped to the stripe and ran off four points.
Boatwright had a kill at game-point, and a block on the second game-point, before the Rams’ Jill Howard tipped home a free ball for the 25-20 win.
