Amalgamated Bank has announced that Brian Smalley of Fairfield has been named senior vice president, director of commercial real estate lending.

Smalley brings 15 years of expertise in commercial real estate (CRE) lending to his new role, as well as a track record of expanding and diversifying the bank’s CRE loan portfolio during his three years at Amalgamated Bank as first vice president.

“Brian Smalley is a smart, strategic leader with the skills and experience to lead Amalgamated Bank’s Commercial Real Estate and Finance Division,” said Ed Grebow, chief executive officer of Amalgamated Bank. “We are pleased he is taking on this expanded role.”

During his tenure at M&T, he managed a portfolio of loans valued at more than $650 million. The loans, ranging in size from $250,000 to $100 million, were used for permanent financing of properties or to acquire or renovate real estate in the New York metropolitan area as well as California, Florida and Michigan.

At Amalgamated, Smalley’s team focuses on loans sized between $1 million and $25 million in the metropolitan areas of New York City, Washington, D.C., Las Vegas and Los Angeles. His team currently manages a portfolio of more than $1 billion of real estate assets, including multifamily, mixed-use, retail, office, co-ops and commercial condominiums.

Smalley began his career at the NYC Housing Partnership, promoting the development of affordable housing in New York City.

“I am proud to lead such a dedicated, experienced group of banking professionals and to be part of a bank that puts a special emphasis on fighting for hard working people,” Smalley said. “Amalgamated has a great history of helping to fund growth in New York and elsewhere, and I look forward to leading the team as we expand our work.”

Smalley earned a bachelor’s degree at Hamilton College and received an MBA from Columbia Business School.
