Vote Republican to keep Fairfield an affordable

To the Editor:

Despite roughly 80% of the town budget being locked into obligations from labor contracts, state mandates and debt service, the RTM can still make a difference in the town’s finances.

Over four years with a majority, RTM Republicans explored every opportunity to keep Fairfield an affordable and desirable place to live and have a proud record to prove it.

We worked with a sense of urgency to slow the growth of spending and taxes by passing $4 million in discretionary spending cuts, rejecting unaffordable labor agreements (forcing pension reforms) and insisting on long-term planning for capital projects to help reduce our debt.

We also improved senior tax relief programs to help seniors remain in their homes. None of this was easy, but we know we did the right thing and without question the town is on a more solid financial footing because our efforts.

Unfortunately, Democrats are in denial of the serious financial challenges we face. With few exceptions, they fought us every step of the way, as if holding town officials accountable and cutting the town budget is the harm they seek to prevent, not the harm caused by increasing taxes by 6.4% in one year on the citizens who elected them. This isn’t balanced and responsible leadership.

Republicans understand more needs to be done, but unlike our counterparts, you can always trust we won’t just stand by and passively accept bad government. So we ask you to vote Republican on Nov. 5, and join us to continue to make a difference.
