Program allows businesses to support Wakeman Boys & Girls Club

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club has received approval from the State of Connecticut to participate in the state’s Neighborhood Assistance Act, which provides state tax credits to Connecticut corporations and businesses that contribute to approved club projects.

“We are very happy to once again take part in the Neighborhood Assistance Act. Last year corporate donors through this program helped us deliver mentoring and tutoring programs to the children we serve from McKinley Elementary School in Fairfield,” Wakeman Executive Director David Blagys said. “This year companies can choose to support our Stratfield Clubhouse Outreach at McKinley School, educational programs at our new Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse in Bridgeport, or long overdue energy upgrades at our Southport Clubhouse.”

Eligible companies (C or S corporations) that contribute to the energy upgrades of the Southport Clubhouse will receive a 100% state tax credit. Corporate contributors to the Stratfield or Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse programs will receive a 60% state tax credit.

Wakeman Boys & Girls Club currently serves nearly 4,000 members from throughout Fairfield, Westport and Bridgeport. The Southport Clubhouse conducts more than 100 athletic, educational, and leadership development programs annually. The Stratfield Clubhouse staff provides on-site programming to 400 students in first through eighth grade from four local schools, as well as a host of school-based activities at McKinley School. The Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse, which opened in June 2011, has already served more than 700 children in grades 3-12 with programs designed to support their academic pursuits, while also providing recreational, cultural, and leadership opportunities that were previously unavailable to them.
