Fairfield woman receives international recognition

Dorothea E. Brennan

Dorothea E. Brennan of Fairfield was recognized with a top international award recognizing her skill as a facilitator by the International Association of Facilitators (IAF).

Brennan received a platinum award for facilitating a series of meetings in which employees of The United Illuminating Co. collaborated to develop a Safety Strategic Plan. Tangible benefits included improvement in UI’s safety performance over several years, as demonstrated by its reduction in lost time and motor vehicle accidents including a 78.9% reduction in the frequency of lost time accidents.

Brennan also received two gold awards for facilitating discussions on diversity and the planning discussions for the successful move of UI to its central facility. This was the largest move in Connecticut in 2012.

Brennan is enthusiastic about the benefits of using a facilitator.

“I love the challenge of facilitating diverse groups,” she said. “I use a combination of group and process techniques and my training to develop a highly structured session. My role is to guide the participants through a series of pre-defined steps to arrive at a result that is created, understood and accepted by all of the participants. I find facilitating groups both fun and rewarding. I have worked within individual companies, with various government boards and nonprofit groups to help them achieve their purpose.”

In total, 32 initiatives from businesses, governments and nonprofit organizations received awards.

“The Facilitation Impact Awards celebrate the power of collaboration,” Brennan said.”

The International Association of Facilitators (IAF is the organization behind the Facilitation Impact Awards.

“We now have concrete proof that group facilitation and group process methodologies yield significant results,” said  Kimberly Bain, IAF global chair. “When we look at the metrics [shown in the submissions], we see higher levels of stakeholder buy-in, and now, for the first time ever, we can show measurable, impactful results.”
