Preschool celebrates its 30th anniversary

Southport Congregational Preschool and Toddler Program celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The school, established in 1983, is a non-sectarian program whose primary goal is to teach children socialization skills in small groups with plenty of teacher interaction.

“We believe a child’s first school experience should be a positive one. We strive to provide a safe, constructive and loving environment so your child will enjoy coming to school each day,” said Program Director Barbara Terrell, who has been director of the school for 25 years.

Southport Congregational was the first preschool in the area to offer a toddler program for 2 year olds. Currently, they are accepting new students for the fall program. Any child turning 2 between April 2013 and October 2013 for young 2s and November 2012 to March 2013 for older 2s is eligible.

“My children loved their experience at Southport Congregational,” said Allison Umbricht, mother of three students who have attended the programs over the past sic years says. “The teachers are warm, the facility is top notch and both my children and I’ve made some very close friends there.”

The teachers, many of whom have been there for more than 10 years, believe their best moments are when the children learn to play and work together creatively. The school also offers enrichment programs such as a visit to the pumpkin patch, nature walks, holiday celebrations and Mother’s Day performances, as well as music and creative movement.
