Fairfield home selected for energy efficiency challenge

Karen Guastelle’s 55-year-old Fairfield home will get an energy efficieny update as part of the Energy SuperSTARS Challenge.

As part of the Energize Connecticut initiative, Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) and The United Illuminating Co. (UI) has chosen a Fairfield resident as one of two participants of the recently-launched Energy SuperSTARS Challenge, a challenge to increase home energy efficiency practices and awareness statewide.

“We had an excellent response from many interested homeowners on our Facebook page, and we are excited to start the Challenge,” said Jamie Howland of Environment Northeast (ENE) and chairman of the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Board. “It’s a very visible way to get Connecticut residents thinking about how they can improve on the energy efficiency of their homes while making smart energy choices. We can’t wait to see how the challenge unfolds for the two SuperSTARS.”

The two Energy SuperSTARS — the other person is from West Hartford — were chosen by CL&P and UI based on their responses to a screening questionnaire about home energy efficiency.

Karen Guastelle’s 55-year-old Fairfield home is challenged by inefficient windows, and she is also researching a more efficient way to cool her home.

“I’m really hoping to get a more energy-efficient home with greater monthly savings from my experience with the Energy SuperSTARS Challenge,” Guastelle said. “I have never had an energy-related service conducted at my home so I am thankful for being chosen and excited to see what the outcome is.”

As an Energy SuperSTAR, Guastelle will be receiving a home energy assessment through Energize Connecticut’s Home Energy Solutions program. This will provide a sound starting point to identify key components such as how much energy is being lost through leaky doors or windows or what appliances might be outdated and inefficient. In addition, energy coaches Jane Bugbee and Craig Clark will also be helping along the way.

Jane Bugbee is a program administrator at UI. She manages the Home Energy Solutions program and strives to help homeowners like Karen Guastelle to save as much energy and money in their homes as possible. Craig Clark is a Home Energy Solutions program administrator at CL&P.
