Sandy Ground Playground going up Sept. 13-14

A Sandy Ground Project playground will be built to honor Jessica Rekos the weekend of Sept. 13-14 at Penfield Beach.

Jessica was 6 when she, classmates and staff were murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown on Dec. 14, 2012.

Fairfield Firefighters IAFF 1426 will hold a groundbreaking at 7 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13.

Construction will continue until dark Friday, resuming at 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, and continuing until work is finished.

A ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 14.

Area restaurants are supporting the Sandy Ground project by collecting contributions, which may be marked by donors who choose to write their names on clouds that are on display.
