Fairfield Museum gearing up education programs

Back to school is just around the corner and the Fairfield Museum and History Center is ready to welcome another wave of school groups and educators through its doors. The museum will unveil an interactive exhibit which explores four centuries of local and regional history.

“Creating Community: Exploring 375 Years of Our Past” will be a catalyst for the development of new educational programs designed to reach more students and communities in the region,” said Christine Jewell, director of education and community programs. “We are eager to open the exhibit for teachers who will see firsthand how the artifacts, themes and activities can engage the students and reinforce curriculum.”

The Fairfield Museum offers educational programs that give kindergarten through 12th grade students field trip experiences and hands-on activities that build critical thinking skills and reinforce learning standards. In 2012, more than 5,000 students participated in the Museum’s education programs from schools throughout Fairfield County.

Grants from the Fairfield County Community Foundation, Connecticut Humanities and other foundations help to support scholarships for schools in urban districts such as Norwalk and Bridgeport to participate in the Museum’s programs. Teachers also benefit from the Fairfield Museum’s professional development programs which provide valuable resources and tools to meet changing curriculum standards.

Museum education docents participate in training and learn how to present the rich history that Fairfield has to offer. Docents lead walking tours of the Town Green and special exhibitions and show visitors how people lived in colonial times at the 1750 Ogden House and Garden.

The next informational meeting for those interested in being a docent will be held Sept. 20 ,at 10:30 a.m. For more information, call Christine Jewell at 203-259-1598 or send an email indicating your interest to [email protected]
