Fairfield glaucoma specialist performing new procedure

The doctors of Ophthalmic Consultants of Connecticut (OCC) recently became the first in New England to offer the newly FDA-approved Glaukos iStent for glaucoma patients.

Dr. Robert Noecker, a glaucoma specialist for OCC and iStent investigator, is scheduled to perform the first procedure in Connecticut that week.

The micro-invasive glaucoma surgical device (MIGS) received FDA approval in late June and is “poised to revolutionize the treatment of glaucoma,” Noecker said.

Noecker and the doctors of OCC have conducted clinical trials that included the insertion of more than 100 of the devices. They are the only surgeons in Connecticut who have that experience, according to a press release from the practice.

“The iStent is exceptionally safe, is easy to insert and the smallest medical device ever created, about the size of the date on a penny,” Noecker said in the release. “And since many patients address both cataract and glaucoma issues simultaneously, iStent represents a enormous step forward. For patients undergoing cataract surgery, the iStent can be implanted at the same time, with excellent outcomes predicted for both procedures and minimal recovery time. In addition, the safety and low-complexity of the device will enable more general ophthalmologists to feel comfortable performing the procedure, making it accessible to many more patients.”

The iStent is the first ab interno micro-bypass implant for the treatment of glaucoma.

“The iStent will radically change how glaucoma is treated,” said Dr. James Thimons of Ophthalmic Consultants of Connecticut. “Every one of my patients would like to get rid of their glaucoma medications. By using the iStent, many of them will be able to go from using several glaucoma meds to fewer or even from one to none at all. This also addresses many of the potentially long term concerns of my patients including the high cost of glaucoma medications and co-pays, toxicity over time, med management.”

The Fairfield office of Ophthalmic Consultants of Connecticut is at 75 Kings Highway Cutoff, and can be reached at 203-366-8000. Other offices are in Meriden and Stamford.
