Man confronts two mothers helping children onto bus

Twice in the past two months, a man has reportedly confronted a mother helping a child with special needs on a school bus in Fairfield, and police want to find the person.

After a report July 22 about an incident July 10 at the intersection of Merwins Lane and Redding Road, another mother contacted police to report a similar incident at Congress Street and Joan Drive during June.

In each case, the suspect is a well-dressed white man in his 60s with gray hair, about six feet tall, driving a newer black Mercedes.

Sgt. Suzanne Lussier said police are not sure if the car is a two-door or four-door.

In the just reported June incident, the man confronted a mother around 3 p.m., and got out of his car to physically block her path. The suspect later passed several cars to catch the woman’s vehicle as she fled, Lussier said.

In the July 10 incident, the mother was buckling her daughter into a child restraint on the bus around 7:25 a.m. when the man began yelling, complaining about the time it was taking. He allegedly parked his Mercedes on the double-yellow line and stood in the road as he confronted the school bus’s occupants.

In this case, he allegedly told the driver and mother to be five minutes earlier the next day or there would be trouble.

“There’s no way he does not know the buses were for special needs students,” Lussier said.

Lussier said it is likely the suspect has exhibited prior acts of rage similar to the two incidents reported.

Fairfield police believe the man lives in the Merwins Lane area or north.

Anyone with information on the suspect’s identity is asked to call Fairfield police at 203-254-4800, or use the TEXT-A-TIP line by sending information to CRIMES (274637) with the keyword FPD (373).

All tips will be kept confidential, Lussier said.

“We think his actions warrant us identifying him and taking appropriate action,” Lussier said.
