Fairfield-Waterford for state title tonight

Fairfield defeated Waterford South, 5-2, in the opening game of the best-of-three 9/10 Little League softball state championship series on July 27 at Trumbull’s Unity Field.
Waterford took game two, 4-0, on July 28. The teams meet tonight at 6 to decide the state title.
In the first game, Fairfield opened the scoring in the top of the third inning.
Bella Bookas pinch ran for Caroline Belinsky after the first baseman reached on an error, and went to third on Sarah Szuchman’s bunt single.
Margaret Nolan’s sacrifice bunt scored Bookas and Szuchman scored on Serena Ta’s double to the left-center gap.
Waterford tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two unearned runs on errors.
Fairfield answered immediately with two runs in the fifth.
Szuchman reached with a leadoff walk and scored on Kylee Holderied’s two-out single. Holderied scored the fourth run when Bookas walked with the bases loaded.
Szuchman scored an insurance run in the sixth, reaching on a single and scoring on a wild pitch.
Holderied pitched a complete-game four-hitter, striking out 10 Waterford batters.
In game two, Haley Bivens pitched a great game for Fairfield, including making nine putouts on balls hit back to the circle.
However, the Fairfield bats could not connect when needed the most and Waterford took advantage of some Fairfield miscues.
