Four members from the Fairfield Ludlowe High School FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) chapter recently participated in the FCCLA National Leadership Conference, July 7 through 11, in Nashville, Tenn.

Students attending were FCCLA State Officer Emily Devine, Phoebe Ertel, Jenny Moran and FCCLA State Officer Meredith Brown. They were invited to attend the national conference after competing and winning awards at the State Leadership Conference in April. Belle Garafola, FCCLA state adviser, accompanied the students.

Emily, Phoebe and Jenny won the Gold Award for their STAR (Student Taking Action with Recognition) project, entitled “Healthy Eating is Elementary.” Meredith won the Silver Award for her STAR project entitled “Kozy Kids 3.” Her teammate, Melanie Jennings, who helped with “Kozy Kids 3,” was unable to attend nationals.

“We are so proud of our outstanding CT FCCLA 2013 Nationals participants,” Garafola said. “They achieved Gold Awards on the State level and then distinguished themselves at Nashville.”

The theme of this year’s conference “Discover Your Voice” drew over 7,000 delegates from 50 states, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education. Since its founding in 1945, the organization has involved more than 10 million youth.

FCCLA is unique among student organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only national in-school organization with the family as its central focus. Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities.
