Today’s teachers need far more than chalk and a blackboard to engage students who are “plugged in” in all other aspects of their lives. Classroom technology is expanding at a dizzying pace, and to keep up with some key improvements, educators at Fairfield University and Eagle Hill Southport School have joined forces to present a four-day teacher-training workshop this summer.

EdTech 2013, which takes place at Eagle Hill School, is open to all educators from both public and private schools. Featured presenters in these sessions are professors from Fairfield University’s Educational Technology Program, as well as independent school educators who are utilizing technology in various components of education.

“With the ever-changing world of technology, we felt we could provide the training in a hands-on informational way as opposed to a top-down lecture format,” said Sharon Plante, director of technology at Eagle Hill and a member of the Connecticut Association of Independent School’s Technology Commission. “We want teachers to gain skills they can take right back to their classroom.”

EdTech 2013 will include sessions that are geared for educators who are both novices as well as those who are more tech savvy and simply want to advance to the next level. Topics will range from iPad apps to assistive technology to robotics.

“We want teachers to continue to develop their technology skills on their own, and this program will set them on their way to do that,” Plante said.

The EdTech 2013 program kicks-off Saturday, July 20, with a free “EdCamp,” in which teachers share ideas in an open forum about what has worked for them in their classrooms as well as the challenges they have faced.

The program continues July 22 through 25, with scheduled workshops at Eagle Hill. Participants can pick and choose which workshops they would like to attend. For more information, visit ehssummerpd.com.
