Fairfield firefighters extinguish a fire to this garage on Rugby Road.

Fairfield’s Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call on June 23, at 10:23 p.m., reporting “black smoke coming out of a garage” which the caller believed to be detached from the house at 81 Rugby Road.

Fairfield Fire Department Engines 1, 2, 3 and 4; Ladders 1 and 2; and Car 3 were immediately dispatched, with Engine 1 arriving on scene and confirming a garage fire. Engine 1 stretched a hoseline to conduct the initial fire attack. Car 3 arrived on scene and Assistant Chief Erik Kalapir assumed command.

Engine Two stretched a second hoseline to protect the exposure and conduct additional fire attack. Ladder 1 supplied manpower for forcible entry and ventilation. Personnel had to hand stretch 300 inches of supply hoseline to the street where Engine 4 performed a split hoselay and charged a supply line to Engine 1.

Engine 4 personnel performed a primary search of the exposed structure on Bridget Lane, then took an outside position as Rapid Intervention Team.

A working fire was declared by Kalapir and the fire was extinguished shortly thereafter. Fire Marshal William Kessler was requested to the scene to perform the investigation on fire cause, and Squad 14 was requested to the scene to provided lighting to assist with overhaul and investigation. Hydrant #103 was used and Aquarion Water Co. was notified. Units demobilized and were placed in service.

Engine 1 Lt. Darrick Lundeen reported the owner had to unlock the garage to provide access to fire fighting personal. The caller from Bridget Lane reported hearing “popping,” which drew her attention to the exterior to find smoke coming from the garage. According to Kalapir, “her awareness and early notification of the fire to 911 coupled with a quick fire attack from Engine 1’s crew may well have saved her home from fire extension” from the garage fire.

Kessler was continuing the investigation as to cause and origin at press time.
