Fairfield martial arts instructor earns fourth degree black belt


Fairfield resident Bonnie Gombos is show here with her teachers the day she received her fourth degree black belt status in martial arts.

Fairfield resident Bonnie Gombos, director of dance and summer workshops for the Darien Arts Center, was recently promoted to the rank of fourth degree black belt after a six-hour rank advancement test on June 2.

Gombos, who has been at the DAC for more than 16 years working with students from ages 3 to adult, teaches martial arts and a wide range of dance styles from classical ballet to jazz and modern. She is also the artistic director of the Darien Arts Center’s adult troupe and she directs and choreographs for the annual showcase performances in October and December.

Gombos achieved her black belt status after 16 years of studying karate.

The other fourth degree black belt at the Darien Arts Center is Bonnie’s husband, James Gombos. The Gombos’ are instructing summer classes in martial arts to both children and adults, as well as a martial arts workshop on basic self defense and awareness for women.
