Fairfield Ludlowe students participate in advertising competition

Team “Give Back,” comprised of, from left, Paul Arancio, Eric Rasmussen, Krissy Bradley, won Fairfield Ludlowe High School’s advertising competition.

Fairfield Ludlowe High School Business students participated in the FLHS’s second advertising competition on June 11. Students spent the semester preparing an advertising campaign for the High School Scholarship Foundation of Fairfield, a local nonprofit organization.

The teams “Give Back” and “Little Did You Know” competed for the “business” of the foundation. Representatives from the foundation included board members Jonathan Kaufman, Joe Varon, Ann Flanagan and Bob Esposito.

Teams had to prepare a business plan, a PowerPoint presentation, and a presentation board highlighting their work, including creative, copy, budgets and an advertising schedule.  Both teams gave a 15-minute pitch to the client and responded to questions from their client and administrators.

“It’s hard to believe these are high school students,” said Varon, board president.

After initiating a tie-breaking procedure, “Give Back” was chosen as the winner. However, the client plans on uses multiple ideas from both pitches.

The advanced advertising course at Fairfield Ludlowe High School is composed of juniors and seniors who have completed prerequisite business courses with a focus on marketing and is taught by Stefanie Weise. The course exposes students to the added element of creating work for an outside client, as well as having to pitch it to them. The class follows the model set by some of the strongest college business programs throughout the country.
