A driver faces charges and his passenger was injured in a high-speed crash that included a 60-foot flight after striking an earthen berm Thursday morning.

State police alerted departments to a vehicle traveling 100 miles per hour on I-95 around 6:30 a.m.

The Subaru got off the Bronson Road exit. At the end of the ramp it continued across both lanes of Bronson Road, hit a berm in a front yard, became airborne and hit a tree 60 feet from the berm, Deputy Chief Chris Lyddy said.

The driver fled, Lyddy added, leaving a passenger trapped inside the vehicle.

The passenger was freed from the car by the Fairfield Fire Department and taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center. He was communicating with rescuers, Lyddy said.

The driver, later identified as 23-year-old Emil Stuck of Wallingford, fled through backyards. He was found hiding under a deck on the back of a Bronson Road house, Lyddy said.

Stuck blamed his speeding on a “flashback,” Lyddy said.

Stuck was charged by Fairfield Police with reckless operation, evading responsibility and interfering with police. Bond was $100 for court June 18.
