Gerics, Culligan feted by SCC

David Gerics and Kevin Culligan from Fairfield Prep were two of 16 student-athletes from eight high schools named The SportsCenter of Connecticut/Southern Connecticut Conference Scholar Athletes of the Month for March.
Now in its seventh year, The SportsCenter of Connecticut/SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month program honors outstanding young men and women each month during the 2012-13 academic year.
David Gerics
A football and baseball standout for the Jesuits, Gerics has been an outstanding student athlete.
He has been part of the success achieved in both programs, and as a result of his development as a baseball player will continue his baseball career at Pomona College next year.
As a student, Gerics ranks among the best in his class, while having taken the strongest course of studies at Prep.
His accomplishments in the classroom have earned him honors every year, as well as recognition of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society.
Gerics also serves the Prep community as a Peer Tutor and has performed service at the Kennedy Center throughout his senior year.
Prep varsity baseball coach Rudy Mauritz said, “David is a conscientious young man who because of the way he approaches his work in the classroom and on the playing field has earned and commands the respect of his peers. Our season would not be as successful without him.”
Kevin Culligan
A four-year member and senior captain of the Jesuits’ tennis team, Culligan has excelled on the court and in the classroom.
His academic achievements have earned him the distinction as a member of Prep’s National Honor Society, as well as a National Merit Finalist.
Culligan serves the Prep community as a Peer Tutor and the local community through the support of the Grassroots Tennis Program, which brings tennis to the inner city.
He is also involved with the Campus Ministry program through leadership in Prep’s Kairos Retreat and Freshman Retreat, and has explored interest in the Stock Market Club and Political Awareness Club.
Upon graduation, Culligan will attend the University of Notre Dame in the fall.
Fairfield Prep assistant tennis coach and guidance counselor Dina Derosa said, “Kevin quietly leads by example with patience, confidence, and a wicked sense of humor. He has been an integral part of making the 2013 squad a team in every aspect of the word.”
“Many thanks to the Sports Center of Connecticut for its support of the SCC and the Scholar Athlete of the Month program,” said SCC Commissioner Al Carbone.
“This conference has been proud of its success for the last 18-plus years, and to be able to recognize outstanding young men and women who demonstrate the desire and ability to succeed solidifies what the SCC is all about.”
Student athletes who are selected must be a varsity letterwinner and have a 3.0/B average, while demonstrating leadership qualities.
Sports Center of CT/SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month recipients and receive a certificate, commemorative tee-shirt and a SportsCenter of Connecticut activity pass.
Founded in 1994, the Southern Connecticut Conference is in its 19th season of competition in 2012-13 with 22 member-schools and nearly 23,000 students.
SCC member schools have captured more than 350 state championships since the league’s inception.
More importantly, the SCC is recognized for its outstanding non-athletic programs and events, which attempt to break down barriers and build bridges of understanding to its students.
