Major traffic delays expected this weekend

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is asking to anticipate to anticipate traffic delays this weekend through the New Haven area.

More traffic can be expected with exits and entrances closed in the area of Fairfield Avenue and Commerce Street in Bridgeport after Friday night’s train collision.

Construction

There will be construction on the connection in the I-95 northbound area and the exit ramp from I-95 northbound, exit 48, to I-91 northbound. This is expected to cause significant delays from Friday, May 17, through Monday, May 20, according to the DOT.

The weekend construction will complete the traffic shift between I-95, exit on that exit and entrance ramp will be performed. This segment of the project is one of a series of many traffic shifts as work progresses on the construction of the Pearl Harbor Memorial (Q) Bridge, reconstruction of the I-95, I-91, and Route 34 Interchange, and other projects that are part of the I-95 New Haven Harbor Crossing Corridor Improvement Program.

Lane closures: I-95 northbound — Lane closures between exit 45, Ella Grasso Boulevard, and exit 48 ramp to I-91 northbound

Northbound reduced to two lanes with left available lane for access to I-91 northbound and right available lane as the through lane to I-95 northbound from 11 p.m. Friday, May 17, to noon Sunday, May 19, and 11 p.m. Sunday, May 19, to 6 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2013.

The off-ramp to Route 34, at exit 47, will remain open. The Long Wharf Drive on-ramp to I-95 northbound, exit 46 area, will be closed 11 p.m. Friday, May 17, and 5 a.m. Saturday, May 18.

Detour Info: Traffic will be detoured to Route 34, I-91 or I-95.

The off-ramp to I-91 northbound, exit 48, will remain open but will be reduced to one lane between 11 p.m. Friday, May 17, to noon Sunday, May 19, and between 11 p.m. Sunday, May 19, to 6 a.m. Monday, May 20.

Long Term Restriction: Long Wharf Drive on-ramp to I-91 north

Upon completion of the shift, motorists from Long Wharf Drive will not have access to I-91 northbound, exit 48. Traffic will be detoured to East Street, Ives Place and back into I-91 northbound. This limitation is a long term, temporary impact and will be in effect until Summer 2014.

In case of cancellation due to weather, the work will be rescheduled to Friday, May 31, to Monday, June 3, 2013.
