Sacred Heart partners with Dublin’s Abbey Theatre

Fairfield-abbeytheatreSacred Heart University has announced a new partnership with the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, the national theatre of Ireland. The partnership will kick off with a performance of Yeats in His Own Words on May 30 in Dingle, Ireland, where Sacred Heart has a campus.

“We are the Abbey Theatre’s U.S. academic partner, which we hope will open up a number of exciting opportunities for our students both here and abroad,” said Seamus Carey, dean of the university’s College of Arts & Sciences.

The partnership will continue with the first United States performance of Maeve’s House on Sacred Heart’s Fairfield campus next fall. The show, written and performed solely by former Abbey company member and veteran Irish actor Eamon Morrissey, focuses on Morrissey’s time on Broadway in the 1970s and his relationship with Maeve Brennan. A Sacred Heart-sponsored follow-up presentation will take place in New York City.

In conjunction with the performances, the director of the Abbey Theatre, Fiach Mac Conghail, will give a lecture. This is the first time that the director of the Abbey Theatre has traveled to lecture since the founding director, William Butler Yeats himself,” said Paul McCarthy, advancement officer for the Abbey Theatre. Morrissey will also give lectures and classes on performance and writing to Sacred Heart students.
