Fairfield firefighters extinguish several weekend car fires

Fairfield Firefighters Elijah Riendeau, Jon Catandella and Ron Petersen extinguish a Merritt Parkway car fire.

The Fairfield Fire Department responded to two car fires over the weekend just off both major highways that run through town.

State Police reported “a car fully involved” in fire at I-95 Northbound Exit Ramp 21 on May 3, at 9:36 p.m. Fairfield Engines 1 and 4, along with Car 3, responded with Engine 1 first on the scene at 9:41, reporting the engine compartment heavily involved in fire with the occupant out of the vehicle on the side of the ramp with a CSP officer.

Engines 1 and 4 extinguished the fire while Car 3 assessed the driver for any medical concerns and finding none, learned that the vehicle had begun to lose power en route from Stamford and that as she had pulled off and parked on the ramp she saw smoke coming from under the hood. The cause of the fire, which was determined to have started in the engine compartment, remains undetermined.

The Emergency Communications Center received a report of a vehicle rollover on the Merritt Parkway Southbound Exit 44 off ramp with all occupants out of the vehicle that was on fire on May 5, at 6:06 p.m.

Engine 5, Ladders 1 and 2 and Car 3 responded, with Engine 5 on scene at 6:13, reporting a vehicle down the embankment on fire. Engine 5 attacked the fire with assistance from Ladder 2 cutting the hood to gain access and extinguish the fire, while AMR emergency medical technicians checked the driver for injuries.

Assistant Chief Scott Bisson conducted the investigation and found extensive flame damage to the engine compartment with extension through the fire wall into the passenger compartment, with the cause of the fire undetermined at press time due to the vehicle collision and rollover. Engine 5 was the last Fairfield Fire Department unit to clear the scene at 7:24.
