Fairfield’s 26th celebration of Arbor Day fit the theme set by the Daughters of the American Revolution: “Rooted in the past, cultivating the present and branching out for the future.”

The DAR presented the town with a Norway spruce dedicated to the memory of Anne B. Jennings, a former member of the Eunice Denise Burr Chapter.

“Miss Jennings, through the chapter, gave the first Christmas tree to the town in 1921. It was given in memory of her dear friend and former regent, Mary B. Kippen,” said Cathy Tymniak, current regent of the DAR chapter.

That gift from Jennings is still decorated and illuminated every Christmas. First Selectman Michael Tetreau said it is the oldest Christmas tree in the state that is still lighted every year — a tradition that was started by Jennings.

The tree dedicated to Jennings Saturday will be cultivated and branch out as the eventual replacement to the aging Christmas tree, Tetreau said, checking with tree warden Ken Placko.

Connecticut urban forester Chris Donnelly of the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) presented Tetreau and Placko with a flag marking the quarter-century that Fairfield has celebrated Arbor Day. The town also met additional criteria to be named a “Tree City, USA.”
