The Mustangs’ Katie Tangney scored six goals, including a lightning-like strike to curb a Falcon rally, to lead coach Tom Davis’ Fairfield Warde girls lacrosse team to a 12-8 victory over Fairfield Ludlowe at Tetreau-Davis Field on Friday night.
“No one thought we could win except us,” said Davis, whose first team as coach was the program’s last to defeat its town rival five years ago. “Katie (who had been injured) was determined to play and play well.”
Coach Heather Lewsey’s Ludlowe team had closed within 8-6 on Liz Pratt’s goal at 19:14 of the second half when Tangney answered off the draw only 12 seconds later.
“We work on shooting a lot and practice makes perfect,” Tangney said of her strong percentage of goals to shots attempted.
“We worked a lot on transition.”
Warde (1-1) took a 7-5 lead into the half and extended it to 10-6 before Ludlowe (0-2) put together its comeback.
Caroline Magee scored three goals for Warde, and Meredith Nerreau, Catie Keegan and Caroline Lambert scored one each.
Bryce McClure, Allie Gorab and Pratt scored two goal each, and Brittany Rosenfeld and Sophie Butcher had one goal apiece.
