Police dog Ruger and Officer Kevin Wells safely found a man threatening to kill himself was located in a drainage ditch between the GE headquarters and Mobil rest area on the Merritt Parkway on Easter Sunday, March 31.

Ruger had no scent to study before attempting to locate the suspect, police said. He and Wells entered the area behind the rest stop after receiving a request for aid from the State Police.

The suspect had told family members he intended to kill himself, police said. A note was left with friends as well. The family contacted state police who subsequently asked for help from Fairfield and Easton.

Police said Ruger led Wells through the woods for more than an hour, pulling hard on his lead as he moved between trails. Eventually they found the suspect trying to hide in a drainage ditch.

The man was transported to St. Vincent’s Medical Center for evaluation.
