Seesaw-a-thon raisers money for school playground

Sacred Heart University’s Greek Life community held its second annual Greek Life Goes Back to Give Back fund-raising event recently to support the construction of a new playground at the Six to Six Interdistrict Magnet School.

Last year’s event raised more than $10,000, and this year’s goal was to surpass that amount. As a school where 100% of students receive free or reduced lunches, the Six to Six Magnet School does not have the resources to fix its worn-down playground. The new playground will offer a safe place for students to interact and play on a daily basis.

With the cooperation of Greek Life and the Six to Six Magnet School’s principal, Chris La Belle, the 24-hour fund-raiser went off without a hitch. The event included interactive games, movies, minute-to-win-it games and seesawing. La Belle, students and parents emphasized how appreciative they are for all that Sacred Heart and Greek Life has done for them.

“We are honored to work collaboratively with Greek Life at Sacred Heart University to replace our school playground for a second year,” La Belle said. “Emily Cordero and all the Greek Life students have welcomed our school community with open arms and have far exceeded what the school was capable of fundraising independently. Greek Life students warmly greeted our students and families at the seesaw-a-thon, and their tireless efforts are greatly appreciated.”

This year, more than $12,000 was raised, surpassing the team’s target. Student Life Graduate Assistant Emily Cordero and Sacred Heart students Toniann Lamattina and Dave Haverly began planning in September for the  event.

“I am extremely grateful and proud of all the hard work, dedication and perseverance that Dave and Toniann put in to organize and run the event so successfully,” Cordero said. “They dedicated many hours to making sure everything ran smoothly and strategizing to reach our target fundraising goal.”
