College student’s death last September ruled a suicide

The death of 23-year-old Justin Hervey of Armonk, N.Y., has been ruled a suicide by Fairfield police. Hervey is believed to have intentionally filled the interior of his vehicle with gasoline before setting it ablaze with himself inside.

“The gasoline identified in the vehicle was dispersed in the front passenger compartment and the gasoline vapor was ignited creating an explosion and ensuing fire,” said Fairfield Police Detective Lieutenant Mike Gagner in a prepared statement.

Gagner went on to say the fire was not the result of any malfunction in Hervey’s blue Chevy Tahoe SUV.

Witnesses, including children, saw the car burst into flames near Tunxis Hill Park on Sept. 6, 2012. Hervey, a part-time Fairfield University student, was extricated from the vehicle and sent to the burn unit at Bridgeport Hospital in critical condition. He remained there until he died on Feb. 27.
