Artillery shell removed from Reef Road house

Police removed a piece of unexploded military ordinance dating back to at least the Vietnam War from a home on Reef Road, March 20.

State bomb experts were called in, but the item was removed without incident.

Fairfield Police Sgt. Suzanne Lussier said the 37mm shell was at least 40 years old and not believed to be a significant danger. It was removed as a safety precaution.

The shell was found in an attic. A family member of the homeowner’s had been in the military during the Vietnam and Korean wars.

It was unknown of the shell was inert or not, but experts did not feel it appeared threatening.
