Series looks at women authors

The Fairfield Woods Branch Library is hosting a four-part lecture series, Write Life with Dr. Mona Garcia,” on Mondays at 6:30 p.m., beginning April 8 and continuing on April 22, May 6 and 20.

The program will focus on women authors who left a permanent mark on 19-century English literature. The series will begin with Jane Austen and continue with Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the Brontë Sisters and conclude with Elizabeth Gaskell.

April 15, 2013 – May 23, 2013

Program to focus on Kubrick films

Dr. Mark Schenker will be focusing on the films of Stanley Kubrick in the third installment of his series, “How to Read a Film.” Film screenings will be on Mondays at 2 p.m. and discussions will follow on Thursdays at 7 in the Rotary Room in the main library at Fairfield Public Library.

The schedule is as follows: The Killing, April 15 and 18; Paths of Glory, April 22 and 25; Dr. Strangelove, April 29 and May 2; and Barry Lyndon, May 20 and 23.

The screening of Barry Lyndon on May 20 will take place at 1 due to the length of the film.

IMAGES fifth annual juried exhibition

IMAGES 2013, fifth annual juried exhibition, featuring the work of photographer Philip Trager, runs May 3-July 21, at Fairfield Museum and History Center, 370 Beach Road. Hours: Monday-Friday, 10-4; Saturday and Sunday, noon-4.

Professional, serious amateur and student photographers invited to participate. Selected photographs will be exhibited at the museum.

Fallen Heroes golf tournament

The third annual Fallen Heroes Golf Tournament will be held Monday, May 20 at noon with a BBQ lunch and registration; shot gun start at 1 p.m., and dinner and awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at The Grassy Hill Country Club, 441 Clark Lane, Orange.

Cost is $250 per golfer and $125 for dinner guest. Each golfer will receive lunch, dinner, 18 holes of scramble tournament play and a third annual Tournament Fallen Heroes polo shirt. Sit down dinner includes prime rib or stuffed chicken breast, two-hour open bar at awards banquet and more.

Bullying lecture

Emily Bazelon, senior editor at Slate, will present ‘Sticks and Stones: Defeating the Culture of Bullying and Rediscovering the Power of Character and Empathy’ Tuesday, May 21, from 9:30-11:30 a.m., at Fairfield University’s Aloysius P. Kelly Center.

Author to discuss book

Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, will discuss his new novel, And the Mountains Echoed, for WSHU Public Radio’s Join the Conversation.

The event will be held at Sacred Heart University’s Edgerton Center for the Performing Arts, where he will be interviewed by Roxanne Coady, owner of R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, Wednesday, May 22, at 7 p.m.
