Fairfield sweeps rivals

The Fairfield Coop ski team is off to another fast start, as the boys and girls teams both won the first race of the season at Mt. Southington last week.
The girls team defeated Glastonbury, Westport-Staples, Cheshire and Lauralton Hall of Milford to begin their season with a perfect 4-0 record.
The highlight of this race was the girls victory over Westport-Staples, last year’s state champions, by more than two seconds 302.12-304.64.
They were led led by outstanding racing by Kelsey Tague (second), Sarah Mason (third) and Sidney Burton (fourth).
Other notable finishes by the girls varsity team included Flossie Dewar, Danielle Fisher, Megan O’hare, Kaylie Minogoe, Caroline Lambert, Eliza Wiant and Ana Wyckoff.
The boys team defeated Glasonbury, Westport-Staples, Cheshire and Farmington.
The defending state champion boys team was led by Kyle Mason, who finished in first place in a field of more than 100 skiers with a combined time of 45.15.
Jack Cusick placed second and Ben Hawthorne came in fifth.
The boys varsity team also included excellent finishes by Hamish Dewar, Davey Hawthorne, Zach Finzi, Carl Forst, Christian Tortora, Matt Chan and John Carey.
The top six times totaled 287.99 seconds to better Cheshire and Glastonbury.
Coaches Gary Quiricone, Rick Quiricone and Tom Mason are very proud of both teams and indicated that the preseason workouts and practices are paying off.
