To the Editor:
Let’s face it, in the wake of the Newton carnage, this is probably the last best chance our state legislature will have to enact sensible gun control legislation in Connecticut with some real teeth to replace the feckless loophole-riddled laws we now have.
If our legislators don’t show courage, leadership and determination to fix the problem this time, we might as well abandon all hope. The position for the citizens of Connecticut should be zero tolerance for inaction, and for those legislators who don’t have the courage to stand up to the gun lobby.
And I don’t want to see them falling into the NRA trap of blaming the Newtown carnage on the state’s pitiful public mental health system, because the Newtown shooter’s family is plenty well-heeled enough to have afforded private mental health care.
Finally, let’s not hear that Connecticut already has tough enough gun control laws. That’s like saying we have the healthiest horse in the glue factory.
