A woman accused of failing to properly report the abuse of minors turned herself in to Fairfield police Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 9 a.m. Valerie Wilke, 51, of Joan Drive reported that her daughter’s friend had inappropriate contact with an older man, but refused to provide details to the police.
The accused man turned out to be Jeffrey Schare, the swim coach at Westport’s Staples High School, where he also taught math.
Schare, 43, of Fairfield was arrested in November for allegedly “grooming” two young girls, ages 12 and 8. He was charged with multiple sexual assault charges and risk of injury to a minor.
Schare turned himself in and was released on bond in November.
During the investigation, Wilke allegedly refused to provide police with identifying information though she was described by at least one officer as a “mandatory reporter.” She reportedly told a school counselor that her daughter’s friend had been inappropriately touched.
Wilke was released on a promise to appear in court on Jan. 23. She was charged with failure to report abuse or neglect and interfering with an officer.
