Truck nearly crashes onto Fairfield playground

Parked car struck, pole snapped before vehicle stopped outside closed preschool

One driver was hospitalized after a truck veered out of control on Grassmere Avenue shortly before 7 p.m. Friday, May 19, coming to rest feet from playground equipment at a preschool.

Fairfield Police Sgt. Michael Parris said at the scene that preliminary investigation, including witness accounts, indicated that a black Nissan Frontier pickup struck a sign on the Home Depot side of the road, passed vehicles, climbed onto the sidewalk, struck a car parked in a driveway, a guy wire (snapping the utility pole to which it was attached) and a fence surrounding Pumpkin Preschool at 449 Grassmere Ave., where Exit 23 off I-95 North meets Kings Highway Cutoff. The truck stopped just short of the school’s playground. Pumpkin Preschool was closed at the time of the crash, so no children were on the playground.

Police blocked Grassmere Avenue at Kings Highway Cutoff and at the entrance to Home Depot.

The driver, whose identity was not released by police, was taken to the hospital by American Medical Response.

The top of the snapped pole sat in a nearby tree, the wires attached to drooping into the branches. Parris said United Illuminating had been notified, but as of 8:20 p.m. no outages were reported in Fairfield.

More details will be posted as they become available

I was one of the vehicles that had to veer out of the way to avoid this lunatic from killing me and my 9 year old son. Hope he gets what he deserves!
