Fairfield recognizes National Safe Boating Week

On Tuesday, May 9, Fairfield First Selectman Mike Tetreau issued a proclamation recognizing 2017 National Safe Boating Week at the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 77 Base at the South Benson Marina in Fairfield.

National Safe Boating Week will take place May 20-26 this year and is a nationwide initiative of the U.S Coast Guard aimed at eliminating deaths, injuries and property damage associated with recreational boating.

Fairfield First Selectman Tetreau presented Tim Burke, Flotilla 77 Commander, with a signed 2017 National Safe Boating Week proclamation as USCG Flotilla 77 staff officers and Town leaders participated in the event. To view the proclamation ceremony, click here.

First Selectman Tetreau said, “In preparation of this important week, the Town and members of USCG Flotilla 77 encourage all boaters to consider this occasion as a special opportunity to renew their commitment to their responsibilities and the constant need for safe boating practices.” He added, “I appreciate and thank USCG Flotilla 77 for its good work in helping boaters stay safe in our waters.”

Boating enthusiasts can sign up for one of the courses in basic boat handling and safety which are offered by the United States Power Squadrons, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and other boating organizations; check their boat’s safety equipment and make sure all required equipment is aboard; prepare their boats by scheduling a vessel safety check with their local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or Power Squadrons; make sure everyone — even experienced swimmers — wear a properly fitting U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket appropriate for water activity; and pledge to continue the spirit of “Safe Boating” throughout the entire boating season.
