GFA spikers win NE title

The Greens Farms Academy girls volleyball team won the New England Class C Championship with victories over The Wooster School (3-0), Cheshire Academy (3-0) and King (3-1) this past weekend.
In their impressive home quarterfinal victory against Wooster (25-12, 25-10, 25-9), the Dragons were trading points to start the match when midway through the first set GFA found a rhythm and never looked back.
GFA relied on its consistent passing and tough defense to control the rallies and the offense stayed in attack mode throughout the match.
Defensively the team was led by senior Rachel Schwimmer from Fairfield with 16 digs.
She received tremendous support from senior captain Sarah Young and senior Victoria Engh, who combined for 12 digs, with Young adding 10 kills and Engh seven kills.
Senior Allie Anderson was impressive from the service line with 19 service points.
In GFA’s semifinal victory over Cheshire Academy, the Dragons won 3-0 in close games: 27-25, 25-22, 25-23.
GFA made one big play after the other to keep pace with an equally aggressive Cheshire squad.
In the end it was the play at the net that gave the Dragons the edge, as they recorded a season high in kills with 43.
In the finals against top-seeded King, whom GFA split matches with during the season, GFA knew it was going to be a tough match.
The starters and the subs off the bench were determined to attack every point offensively and keep the ball alive defensively.
Senior setter Claire Comey was stellar with an impressive 58 assists and nine kills.
Young and Engh contributed 33 and 32 kills, respectively.
Defensively, Schwimmer contributed 35 digs.
The Dragons also received outstanding performances from Anderson and senior Jacqueline Young.
Junior Jenny Ball was a big factor at the net with eight kills and four blocks.
Senior Sydney Huffman from Fairfield was clutch coming off the bench with key digs and accurate passing.
The Dragons finished the season with an 11-6 overall record and their second New England title.
