3,200 Fairfield voters signed a petition requesting a special election for the recently vacated Board of Selectmen (BOS) seat. Selectmen Tymniak and Bateson chose to ignore the petition thereby denying the people of Fairfield the election we are demanding and entitled to as a matter of state law. Selectmen Tymniak and Bateson’s actions, or really their inaction, sends a strong message to the voters of Fairfield that we do not matter.
I attended the BOS meeting where the town attorney explained that the BOS was required by statute to set the date of the special election. Rather than following the law and honoring the will of the people, they refused to set the date making the town vulnerable to a lawsuit.
The town attorney is hired to protect the best interests of the town. Since Selectmen Tymniak and Bateson have ignored the counsel of the town attorney, one has to question whose interest they have in mind when making their decisions? It is clearly not the best interest of the town.
They are placing their own self interests and desire for power ahead of the well being of the town and the wonderful citizens who live here. There is no place for these kinds of political stunts in Fairfield. Any elected official who does not put the people first should be ashamed and rejected by voters. Please write to Mr. Tymniak and Mr. Bateson at firstname.lastname@example.org and demand they set the date of the election.
