Residents returning to damaged houses in the beach area are finding slash marks and boxes spray-painted on front walls.

One resident at the community meeting Friday at First Church Congregational said the markings mean the house has been condemned, which is not the case.

Fairfield’s Unified Command has released two charts from the Federal Emergency Management Agency which explain the markings, used by searchers to indicate the house is safe, no victims are inside and whether any hazards exist.
