Fire destroys car, closes I-95 exit ramp for an hour

A car fire closed Exit 19 on I-95 northbound for about an hour Sunday afternoon, Feb. 23.

No injuries were reported.

“The driver of the car was very lucky to have been able to safely stop the car and get out without getting burned or injured,” Fairfield Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bisson said.

Fairfield firefighters extinguished the blaze while the Westport Fire Department protected the scene.

The 2013 Volkswagen Golf, worth an estimated $30,000, suffered $20,000 in damage, according to the Fairfield Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
